Windsor Terrace – The Secret Part of Brooklyn

June 17, 2009

You’ve certainly heard of Park Slope. And, by now, Fort Greene and Prospect Heights have hit the radar screen. But, to the south of Prospect Park lies a jewel of a neighborhood, Windsor Terrace. Here are some of the finer sites to take in when visiting this quaint, calm neighborhood.

First, the finest bagels in Brooklyn lie on Prospect Park West and Windsor Place

Terrace Bagels

“Terrace Bagels” is known to have the chewiest bagels in the borough. Plus, their coffee is rock solid. You can also purchase plenty of take-out food, ready made for Prospect Park. There are plenty of salads, sandwiches and other outdoor fare made ready for travel. Load up on some water though, as the Park has few service carts.

“Terrace Bagels” is a terrific stop for someone visiting the ‘hood.” Having a bagel in Brooklyn is a rites of passage for anyone who truly wishes to say “I know New York”.

Now, there are 2 restaurants that must be mentioned when discussing Windsor Terrace. One is rather obvious, and another is not.

Enzo’s Brickoven has one of the top 3 finest brick-oven pizza’s in Brooklyn

When you walk in, you know you are in an old school pizza restaurant. There are no frills here, but the results speak for themselves. They also carry delicious pasta dishes, with a nod to the lasagna. An older friend of mine used to live in Brooklyn, and every time he returns to the neighborhood he goes to Enzo’s for their delicious brick oven pizzas.

The last stop in this delicious neighborhood is Fez Café

Fez Café

If you care for Moroccan and North African cuisine, you will love Fez. When you walk in, don’t be started by how small the restaurant is. In fact, it’s a mirage. Walk through the kitchen, past the bathrooms, and find yourself in the midst of a true Saharan feast. A large tent overhangs half of the back garden, with the other half left for the open air and tiki lamps. The food is very tasty, with the Tajine taking the blue ribbon (at least among my friends).

Lastly, if you enjoy a hookah, or the occasional belly dancer, Café Fez is a must for you. Here, like with Windsor Terrace, you get it all.

Finally, if you visit Windsor Terrace, you must venture through Bartel-Pritchard Square and view one of the city’s very few World War I memorials. It is there to honor the community’s fallen during that epic war. Beyond the square lies Prospect Park, Olmstead’s masterpiece. According to legend and lore, Olmstead himself said Prospect Park was far greater than Manhattan’s Central Park. Brooklynites would not disagree.
